How I spend my days

An experiment in tracking my time with Toggl

a white clock on a white wall, tracking time

I recently wrapped up a month of tracking my time in Toggl. I tracked everything — client work, social media, lunch, staring off into the void waiting for creativity to strike. All of it.

After a month of tracking, I have a lot of data to show how I spend my days. It’s honestly a little surprising.

Some takeaways:

  • Tasks that take up a lot of mental space for me often don’t actually take very long to execute.

  • Turns out writing social media captions takes up way more of my day than I suspected.

  • I’m not batching work as much as I’d like AKA I’m still working very reactively.

How will I use this information moving forward?

I’m going to keep tracking.

I’m hoping I’ll see some opportunities for outsourcing. It will also help me estimate how long a project will actually take (I want to better achieve flow by scheduling similar tasks together.) I can provide more accurate bids to my clients. And now I can better predict how much time I need for what I’m calling “creativity dissociation.”

What about you?

Do you know how you spend your precious time? Are you clear on where you add the most value to your work?

If you’re curious how I can help free up your time by providing freelance communication support, email me today.

xoxo,

Alison
